About the Summer School Course

The summer school on microalgae related industrial processes includes lectures from internaional experts, hands-on training, simuation and process modelling tools, industrial site visits, cultural site visits, and networking with researchers and industry. 

Course modules include:

  • Microalgae biology and growth: Photosynthesis, physiology and cultivation strategies.
  • Photobioreactor engineering: Design and operation of open and closed reactors.
  • Monitoring, modelling & control: Sensors, digital monitoring and process optimisation.
  • Harvesting and biomass processing: Dewatering, cell disruption and biorefinery concepts.
  • Techno-economic and sustainability assessment: Process feasibility, TEA-LCA
  • Applications and markets: Food, feed, wastewater treatment and bio-products.

Target Group

This course is designed for Master’s students in the final phase of their studies, PhD candidates, and early-career professionals with a background chemical or environmental engineering, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, or related fields. Advanced prior knowledge of microalgae is not mandatory, but a basic understanding of mass balances, reaction kinetics, and biological processes is recommended. 
Participants should bring their personal laptop for exercises in modelling, simulation, and data analysis.
